Spray Tanning Before & After: What to Expect & Prep

Learn how to prepare for spray tanning, what to wear, how long it lasts, and aftercare to maintain your tan.

Getting a spray tan looks effortless on the other side — but the results you walk out with depend almost entirely on what you do before you step into the booth and right after you leave. Skip the prep, and you're looking at streaks, patchy fading, and a color that lasts three days instead of ten. Here's exactly what to expect at every stage.

Why Prep Makes or Breaks Your Spray Tan

Spray tan solution bonds to the outermost layer of dead skin cells. If that layer is uneven — dry patches, stubble, leftover product — the DHA (dihydroxyacetone) develops inconsistently and fades in blotches. Good prep isn't optional; it's the foundation of every solid before and after result.

48–72 Hours Before Your Appointment

Start here, not the morning of your tan.

  • Wax or shave at least 24–48 hours before your appointment. Freshly waxed skin has open pores that absorb solution unevenly, causing dark dots. Shaving right before creates the same problem.
  • Exfoliate thoroughly with a physical scrub or exfoliating mitt. Focus on knees, elbows, ankles, and wrists — anywhere skin is rougher or drier.
  • Moisturize daily up until the night before, then stop. Lotion on appointment day creates a barrier that blocks absorption.
  • Avoid swimming or long soaks in a chlorinated pool — they strip the skin and affect how solution develops.

The Day Of: What to Bring and Wear

Show up with completely bare, product-free skin. That means:

  • No deodorant, perfume, or body lotion
  • No makeup on your arms, neck, or décolletage if they're being sprayed
  • Dark, loose-fitting clothing to wear after — tight waistbands and bra straps leave marks in fresh solution
  • Flip-flops instead of sneakers (closed-toe shoes cause streaking on the feet)

Your technician will provide a barrier cream for palms, nails, and the soles of your feet. Some salons provide disposable underwear or you can go nude — both are fine.

During the Session: What Actually Happens

A standard spray tan session takes 10–20 minutes in the booth or 20–45 minutes for a manual airbrush application by a technician. Airbrush is more customizable and better for contouring; booths are faster and more affordable, typically ranging from $25–$50 compared to $50–$100+ for a hands-on airbrush service.

The solution goes on wet and cool. You'll rotate through a few positions — arms out, legs apart, turn to the side — so every angle gets even coverage. A bronzer in the solution gives you immediate color, but the real DHA development happens over the next 6–12 hours.

The Development Window: Don't Rush It

This is where most people lose their results.

  • Rapid-development formulas (1–3 hours) are great if you can't wait, but they still need to set before any water contact.
  • Standard formulas develop in 6–8 hours and generally last longer.
  • Avoid sweating, water, and tight clothing during the entire development window.
  • Don't apply any product to your skin until after your first rinse.

Your first rinse should be lukewarm water only — no soap, no body wash. The bronzer will run off and the water will look orange; that's normal. The actual tan is locked in underneath.

After Your First Rinse: Maintaining the Result

A well-maintained spray tan lasts 7–10 days. To get there:

  • Moisturize twice daily with a fragrance-free, oil-free lotion
  • Pat dry after showers — never rub
  • Avoid long, hot baths and exfoliating products
  • Swim as little as possible; chlorine and saltwater fade tans fast
  • Use a tan extender product in the final few days to even out fading

Avoid products with AHA/BHA acids, retinol, or anything labeled "exfoliating" — they accelerate cell turnover and strip your tan faster.

Realistic Before and After Expectations

First-timers are sometimes surprised that a spray tan develops darker than expected before softening into its final shade by day two. That initial depth is mostly the bronzer. Your true result shows up 24 hours after your first rinse.

Skin type matters too. Drier skin fades faster. Fair skin may need a lighter solution to avoid looking orange. A good technician will adjust solution depth to your natural tone — this is worth asking about when booking.
